Lumpectomy vs. Mastectomy: Which Is Better?
If you’ve been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, you may wonder which would be the better option, when given a choice between a lumpectomy and a mastectomy. Both are effective treatments, but they are different. The best option depends on your specific situation and personal preferences.
What’s the Difference?
Lumpectomy (also called breast-conserving surgery) removes only the tumor and a small amount of surrounding tissue. Most of the breast remains intact. Mastectomy on the other hand removes the entire breast and sometimes nearby tissue.
While lumpectomy is often followed by radiation therapy, mastectomy usually, but not always, eliminates the need for radiation therapy.
Is One Better Than the Other?
For early-stage breast cancer, studies show that survival rates are the same whether you a lumpectomy with radiation or a mastectomy. Both options have low risk of local recurrence (cancer returning in the same breast). Neither option is better for everyone — it depends on your medical condition and comfort level.
Reasons to Consider a Lumpectomy:
You want to keep most of your natural breast
The cancer is small and in one area
You’re okay with having radiation therapy after surgery
Reasons to Consider a Mastectomy:
You have a larger tumor or cancer in multiple areas
You can’t (or prefer not to) have radiation
You have a high risk of a new cancer (such as with BRCA gene mutations)
You want greater peace of mind
